DTWID Digest #2
Hey fructose fam, welcome to the second issue of DTWID Digest! A monthly collection of biased observations from yours truly. I hope you had a great Black History Month!
What I’m Loving Right Now
I really enjoyed Boba Fett! It is… not perfect. But it delights me, and I came away from it feeling satisfied and more invested in the Star Wars universe. I loved the space vespas and the cyberpunks and the really bad politicking. I loved it as a snapshot of a moment in time in this vast story, a moment that perhaps seems insignificant in the grand scheme, but a moment that ripples through the rest of the universe. It’s important to me that this be included because I felt there was just overwhelming—not hate, dismissal maybe—of the show, and I wanted to combat that some. I will now be going into a wee bit of a rant.
As a fan of shows that can be enraging at times, but that I ultimately love and want better for, I really do not like being told to stop watching them. BUT in the case of The Book of Boba Fett, my overwhelming thought week after week, tweet after tweet, was that it’s not FOR everyone. People could simply… not watch it. When we’re talking about a show like Doctor Who or Supernatural that span several seasons over several years, that’s a harder ask. But when it is a standalone show, that is a limited series as far as we know, it could simply be a chapter you skip in the larger Star Wars story. Fin.
In gaming news, Pokémon Legends: Arceus released on January 28th for Nintendo Switch and playing it has been a ball! It is maybe the first mainline Pokémon game that did not come in two versions. Every player has the same set of mons to catch and catalog, and are exploring the historic Sinnoh region (called Hisui) with the same tasks. But the new entirely open-world map means that players are approaching gameplay extremely differently. Some folks (me) powered through the story and are circling back to explore the areas fully and catch all of the available mons. Some folks are filling up their Pokédex and checking off all the research tasks. Some folks are shiny hunting, or alpha hunting, or both! The many different approaches to the game make it an exciting and refreshing entry into the series!
My game tastes vary wildly, so stay with me…
Cyberpunk 2077 finally released its huge 1.5 patch which, along with fixing hella bugs, added new apartments(!), expanded interactions with romanceable characters, and crucially, added the option to customize your appearance! I play on Google Stadia, so my gameplay has not been as marred by bugs as those on lower-end PCs and last-gen consoles, and I’ve experienced nothing game-breaking. So I’ve been able to enjoy the game since launch, and was much more interested in the updated content. I am LOVING being able to change V’s look and having new digs! I want even more customization inside the apartments, and more ways to make Night City my own. I enjoy the game and I think now is a good time to try it out, or dive back in!
Black TARDIS
I started recording the podcast! The first (mini?) episode is available now, and the pod will be freely distributed wherever you get your podcast! Supporters at Cane Companion and higher will get behind-the-scenes, bonus content, and other exclusives from the pod and more! I will be dropping several polls over the next few weeks to get nominations for Classic Who serials to watch, Big Finish audios to check out, and other Doctor Who media folks think I should get into—and talk about!
I am also launching, or rather publicly promoting the WhoFUBU community! Doctor Who For Us By Us is a fan community for BIPOC by BIPOC that centers, celebrates, and supports BIPOC fans and creators. We’re small, but growing, and hoping to create a safe space for Whovians of color—and Whovians from other historically-marginalized communities. Feel free to share and encourage folks to check us out at blackinspaceandti.me/community!
Gallifrey One
The inaugural Black TARDIS Pod episode was my recap and commentary on this year’s Gallifrey One convention. Life—and depression, if I’m being honest—got in the way of me writing out a full recap, but the overall sentiment is positive.
- I enjoyed myself! I loved the guests and the programming.
- I felt safe! I’m satisfied with the enforcement of COVID regulations.
- I am energized! I have so much I want to do!
My one major criticism, outlined in the pod, is wanting better moderation for fan panels and the mainstage interviews. But ultimately that’s one bad amidst a lot of good.
Delete This When I’m Dead
My non-Who podcast is also in the works! Stay tuned for DTWID Pod and for more fresh takes and pop culture commentary at stg1.deletethiswhenimdead.com
News + Current Events
- States and locales are lifting mask mandates which means the country is setting itself up (again) and we’ll never be free. Cynical, I know! But what can you do? 🤷🏽♀️
- Please continue to wear masks indoors to protect yourself and the immunocompromised who can’t get vaccinated.
- Please get vaccinated and boosted!
- And if neither are doable for you, please stay home!
- Crunchyroll is finally getting Funimation content! I do not love monopolies, but in this case, the overlap and the disparity between what was available on these platforms deeply upset me. I love having one place to get most of my anime! Now they just need to hire a UI/UX designer because the interface is… whew… a mess! (This is technically March news but since it happened before I published this, we counting it!)
- I do not know enough or feel qualified to have opinions on Russia and Ukraine, but it is news. I am trying to learn as much as I can while maintaining a healthy distance, because… I do not have the capacity. But, it is happening and it is awful. My very mildly-informed take: Power to the Ukrainians! Down with dictators! Fuck Putin, periodt.
Black History Month Mayhem
- We’re doing Black History Month in March because February was chaotic AF and frankly… very anti-Black at times. My favorite of the many hilariously awful things that happened this month was Thandiwe Newton crying in light-skint. This is an extremely intra-community thing, so if you don’t get it, it’s not for you! And that’s okay! But iykyk. 😂😭
Other Things
- I changed my twitter name from @queerspecimen to @niqfury!
- I talk about Pokémon in BGC Presents: #Stories4Sinnoh!
- I need to watch Euphoria
- DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is killing it!
- The whole CW/DC Universe right now is solid!
