Happy Black History Month, Sucrose Supporters!
This newsletter gets here when it gets here but I’m happy to say the video version of this is already live! If you haven’t watched that, this is the jist. If you have, you can skip this honestly. Unless you want to click through to some related links I did not include in the video. Either way, here’s the DTWID Digest of the last month or so.
What I’ve Been Loving
(Ya noun been going THROUGH IT so the escapism of it all cannot be overstated)
Dragon Ball / Z
Finally getting into some of the more classic anime. Goku is the prototype for a lot of the wholesome buff himbo characters I love. It’s also my favorite anime genre, children in peril. I finished 150-something episodes of Dragon Ball and am 50ish episodes into Dragon Ball Z.
Chainsaw Man
This is just really good shit. Very violent. But also funny and surprisingly sweet—in moments. Enjoyed the first season so much I may actually read the manga instead of waiting fiftylem years for a dubbed follow up season.
The Last of Us
I’m enjoying the show so far and loving the performances. I’m not quite sure what game players think the show is doing that hasn’t already been done well in similar narratives, but genuinely hoping to be proven wrong about the relative predictability of the story.
The Circle S5
The best season. The best cast where multiple people of color make it to the finale. So many people to genuinely root for. Watch it!
Willow
Fun fantasy moment with an enjoyable core cast and character dynamics. Thoughtful writing and a nice expansion of the film’s lore. I recommend it!
Leverage: Redemption Season 2
Everything you love about Leverage, still being done well. Fun heists and grifts. Likable characters. New and interesting people to root for or against. A feel-good moment. Watch it!
Glass Onion
Daniel Craig and Janelle Monae on the most exquisite bullshit. *chefs kiss* Incredible release timing. Iconic. No notes.
The Menu
Delightfully unhinged. Not highbrow. Not lowbrow. Just… brow. Beautiful performances all around, just *licks fingertips* delectable. 😂
What’s Happening In Pop Culture
WB Discovery still being The Worst
Still on sight for Zaslav for me. Batgirl is “unreleasable” but y’all let Black Adam fly and still releasing The Flash?!! Mmmkay.
Paramount+ and Showtime on that bullsh*t too
Not only are they combining under the weak ass Paramount+ branding, they’re canceling and deleting shows from the service—depriving creators of potential income. Very antagonistic behavior.
